Bankruptcy

When low-income New Yorkers face financial crises, the implications are huge: a wage garnishment can send a worker back to dependency on public benefits—or back to homelessness; an illness or job loss can mean eviction or a home foreclosure. The stakes are often higher for the poorest debtors.

The Bankruptcy Project at the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) aims to provide bankruptcy relief for people who are unable to pay their debt no matter the reason(s). This allows those who are struggling to be relieved of their debt(s) and get a fresh start. Instead of focusing on mounds of debt that will continue to build and/or go unpaid, they can focus on landing gainful employment, find affordable housing and keep the wages they are making without wages being withheld or taken by debt collectors.  If you would like to speak to a legal advocate about filing for bankruptcy, please call our Helpline at 1.877.777.6152 to complete our intake form.

Or, click here to complete the online intake/application form and a legal advocate will contact you to discuss your individual situation in confidence.
